Big Cottonwood Canyon

Saturday, 4 September 2010, 6:30am

Big Cottonwood Canyon. A few weeks ago Charlie and I decided to drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon to enjoy our Sunday afternoon. It was the 11th of July and it was a warm day down in Salt Lake valley and it was really nice to be able to drive up the canyon and enjoy the cooler weather and beauty of the mountains. The canyon is actually a really fun drive and probably about 15 to 20 cooler than the valley. I snapped a few pictures from my camera and really like how this one turned out. Enjoy.

Salt Lake Sunset

Sunday, 22 August 2010, 3:01pm

Salt Lake Sunset. Today is my last day of summer before school starts up again tomorrow. It has been a fun summer with lots of fun activities and great memories. A few weeks ago while visiting some friends, we were able to watch the sunset and I was able to capture this picture with my little point-and-shoot camera. My goal is to carry my Nikon more frequently so I can take some better pictures. It was a beautiful warm summer evening and the colors were amazing.

Utah Symphony at Deer Valley

Sunday, 8 August 2010, 8:30am

Utah Symphony at Deer Valley. Friday night we decided to drive up to Deer Valley and see the Utah Symphony perform many fantastic pieces of music. It is part of the Deer Valley Music Festival that they hold every summer. The weather was perfect with large clouds and a cool breeze during the performance. Off in the distance you could watch the lightning storms. We brought a cooler with a few bottles of wine and a small selection of different cheeses.

These are the amazing pieces that were performed:

  • Overture to Fuillaume Tell (“William Tell”) – Gioacnino Rossini
  • La Primavera No. 1 from The Four Seasons – Antonio Vivaldi
  • Selections for Ochestra from Porgy & Bess – George Gershwin/Bennett
  • The Ride of the Valkyries from Die Walkure – Richard Wagner/Hutchenrugter
  • Symphony No. 5 in C Minor – Ludwig Van Beethoven
  • Finlandia – Jean Sibelius
  • Kanon in D – Johann Pachelbel
  • Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah
  • 1812 Overture Solennelle – Piotr Ilych Tchaikovsky

There is a lot more information at the festival’s website www.deervalleymusicfestival.com or the Utah Symphony’s wesbite www.utahsymphony.org.

I managed to take a few pictures with my iPhone and this happens to be one of the best photographs that I have ever taken on my iPhone. Enjoy.

Evening Walk

Sunday, 1 August 2010, 6:30am

Evening Walk! I set a goal to try to walk Jake at least five times a week and for the most part I have been meeting my goal. I have been using a really cool iPhone App called Run Keeper. It uses GPS to track your exercise (walk, run, hike) and generates cool maps and graphs with your pace, speed and duration. Check out my profile at http://runkeeper.com/user/farookkhan

I took this picture before heading out on a walk and it is a little out of focus but I really like it. This was actually taken back in May but I thought I would share it.

Artwork: Charlie

Saturday, 10 July 2010, 10:37pm

Artwork: Charlie. A few months ago I was playing with the configurations on my camera and snapped a few pictures from the front room. I managed to capture this portrait of Charlie and while I don’t normally consider many of my photographs as artwork, I thought that this picture really captured a moment and personality.

While I am lacking in formal photographic analysis and commentary, these are some of my thoughts about this picture. Charlie has a diet coke in his hand and he is wearing one of his favorite shirt combinations (white long-sleeve underneath a colored t-shirt). His attention is toward my direction but he isn’t looking at me or the camera. The light from the window is lighting his face perfectly and there is some distractions to the left, but the picture frames add to the background. Charlie is more or less void of emotion. You can’t really tell if he is happy, tired, sad, excited.

I know that Charlie actually does not like this picture, but I am going to share it anyway because I really like it. Enjoy.

Hiking the Y

Saturday, 24 April 2010, 12:00pm

Hiking the Y. About a year or two before Yasmin was set to graduate from Brigham Young University, my mom made it a personal goal to hike the Y mountain that overlooks the BYU campus. This is often a tradition that BYU students take when they first come to campus. My mom made it a goal to be physical fit enough to climb the mountain. After months of training, organizing a hiking club in California and preparing for this day, she successfully met her goal. It was a very fun morning and it was a great way to celebrate Yasmin graduating from college. I’ve included a few pictures from our hike.

Spring Portraits 2010

Friday, 23 April 2010, 12:30pm

Spring Portraits 2010. After the Friday Graduation ceremonies for Yasmin we went outside to grab some fresh air and the weather was interesting to grab some photographs of Charlie and Shaheen. I was using my flash and really like these photographs. These were taken outside the BYU Marriott Center on the South East side.

Fishing Deer Creek Reservoir

Sunday, 11 April 2010, 5:36pm

This weekend I was able to head up Provo Canyon and go fishing at Deer Creek Reservoir. It was a little cold but otherwise a gorgeous morning. The sky was mostly clear with some high clouds and the sunrise really made the mountains look great. I went fishing with some good friends and while we didn’t catch any fish, we did have a really good time.

My favorite picture of the set is the three fishing poles sitting on the dock with Mt. Timpanogos in the background.
